Allstate Sugar Bowl
The 2012 meeting between #13 Michigan (11-1) and #17 Virginia Tech (11-3) in the 78th annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Classic pitted a revived Wolverine program, under 1st year head coach, Brady Hoke, against Frank Beamer and his Hokies, who have sustained excellence the last two decades with him at the helm. Both known for their defense, these two teams had never met before; Michigan was making its second-ever trip to the Sugar Bowl, after a loss to Auburn in 1984, while Virginia Tech was returning to the site for the fourth time in school history, having played for the national title in 2000. Despite having more than double Michigan’s total yards (377-184), Michigan earned a 23-20 victory in overtime with Brendan Gibbons 37-yard field goal.
